ExifTool online: the commands you use, without installing anything

ExifTool is the command-line program for reading and writing file metadata. When you only need an answer for one or a few files, these pages give you the same result in your browser, with no download, no terminal and no sign-up.

When the command line is still the better choice

Install ExifTool when you work on whole folders at once, write or copy tags between files, rename photos by date, or need to keep files on your own computer. It's free and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

If you need metadata inside your own app or script, the ExifTools.com API reads and cleans files over HTTP and returns JSON, without maintaining an install on your server.

Questions

Is this the official ExifTool?

No. ExifTool is a free program by Phil Harvey that you install on your computer. ExifTools.com is a separate website that reads files with it on our servers and shows the result in plain language.

Do I need to download anything?

No. You drop a file on the page and see the result in your browser, on a computer or a phone.

What happens to my file?

It is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The metadata found in it is kept on a results page with its own link, which you can share.

Can I edit or write tags online?

You can remove all metadata online with the Metadata Remover. For writing specific tags on many files, the command-line ExifTool is the right tool.
