Which Canon cameras save their shutter count
Unlike Nikon and Sony, most Canon cameras don't write the shutter count into their photos. The EOS-1D series and a few EOS R models are the exception, and for them this tool reads it straight from a JPEG or CR3.
For most other Canon models, including the Rebel series and the EOS 5D, 6D and 90D, the count stays inside the camera. It can only be read over a USB cable with dedicated software or by a Canon service centre.

Questions and answers
Why doesn't my Canon show a shutter count?
Most Canon models simply don't save it in their photos. That's a Canon design choice, not a problem with your file. If your model isn't one that saves it, we tell you so instead of guessing.
Which Canon cameras save the shutter count in their photos?
The EOS-1D series and some EOS R models, such as the R5, R6 and R6 Mark II. Drop in a photo and you'll know in seconds whether yours does.
How else can I check a Canon's shutter count?
Connect the camera to a computer with a USB cable and use a shutter count app that talks to Canon cameras directly, or ask a Canon service centre.
Does the Canon R5 or R6 count include electronic shutter shots?
Yes. On those models the saved count includes electronic-shutter shots as well as mechanical ones, so it shows total use rather than shutter wear alone.
How many shots is a Canon shutter rated for?
Canon rates its bodies from about 100,000 shots for entry models up to 500,000 for the EOS R5 and the EOS-1D X series. Many shutters last longer than their rating.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
