How a photo knows its phone

Every phone writes its make and model into the photos it takes, along with the camera it used and its software version. Samsung saves a model code like SM-S918B, which we translate into the name you know, such as Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Most phones now have several cameras. From the lens details we can tell whether a shot came from the main camera, the ultra-wide, the telephoto or the front camera.

Questions and answers

How can I tell which phone took a picture?

Drop the photo into the box above. If it's the original file, you'll see the phone model, which of its cameras was used and its software version.

Can I tell if a photo was taken with an iPhone?

Yes. iPhone photos record the exact model, such as iPhone 15 Pro, and which of its cameras took the shot.

What does a code like SM-S918B mean?

It's Samsung's model code. The part after "SM-" identifies the phone (S918 is the Galaxy S23 Ultra) and the last letter is the region or carrier version. We show the product name for common Galaxy models.

Why does it say no phone was found?

The details were removed. Screenshots never have them, and WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and most messaging apps strip them when you send or post a photo. The original file keeps them.

Can I see which phone took a photo someone sent me?

Only if they sent the original file, for example by email, AirDrop or a cloud link. Photos sent through chat apps are re-saved without these details.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
