Why a file's name can lie
A file's extension is just part of its name, and it can be wrong: websites save WebP images as ".jpg", phones send HEIC photos with the wrong ending, and downloads sometimes arrive misnamed.
This tool looks at the file's contents to tell you what it really is, with its MIME type and usual extension. That's usually why an app says a file is "corrupted" or "unsupported".

Questions and answers
How can I find out what type a file is?
Drop it into the box above. We identify it from its contents and show its real type, MIME type and usual extension.
Why won't my ".jpg" open?
It may not be a JPEG at all. Websites often serve WebP or AVIF images, and iPhones use HEIC. If we find a mismatch, renaming it with the right extension usually fixes it.
What is a MIME type?
The standard name for a file format used by browsers and servers, such as image/jpeg or application/pdf.
Can a file be dangerous if its extension is wrong?
A mismatch can be used to disguise a file. Be careful with files from people you don't know, especially programs posing as documents or images.
Does renaming a file convert it?
No. Renaming only changes the name. To actually change the format, convert the file in an app.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
