Where Sony keeps the shutter count
Sony Alpha cameras record a shutter count inside their maker notes, in a block whose layout changes from model to model. This tool reads it for most Alpha bodies of the last decade, from a JPEG or an ARW raw file.
Some older models start counting again from zero after 65,535 shots, and some newer ones count only mechanical-shutter shots, so the number can differ from the total number of photos you've taken.
- Alpha mirrorless
- JPEG and ARW
- Most models since 2014
- Rollover noted
Questions and answers
How do I check the shutter count on my Sony?
Take a photo, copy the original JPEG or ARW from the memory card, and drop it into the box above. The count appears in a few seconds.
Does the Sony count include silent shutter shots?
It depends on the model. Many Alpha bodies count every frame, while some newer ones count only mechanical-shutter shots. Either way, it shows how much the camera has been used.
Why is my Sony's count lower than expected?
Some older Sony cameras start again from zero after 65,535 shots, so a heavily used camera can show a low number. If the body looks well used, ask about its history.
How many shots is a Sony shutter rated for?
Sony rates its full-frame bodies at around 200,000 shots for the α7 III and up to 500,000 for the α1. Many shutters last longer than their rating.
Why can't it find my Sony's shutter count?
Photos that were edited, converted or sent to a phone through an app lose the maker notes where the count is kept. Use the original file from the memory card. Sony Xperia phones and RX compacts may not record a count.
