Where a video keeps its date
Phones and cameras save the moment recording started inside the video file. iPhones even store the time zone. That date stays with the file when you copy, rename or email it.
The date your computer shows is usually just when the file arrived on it. This tool reads the recording date from the video itself, which is what you need to put clips in order or check when something was filmed.

How can I tell when a video was recorded?

Why is the time a few hours off?
The video standard stores times in UTC, but many cameras save their local clock time instead, and apps can't tell which one they got. If the time looks shifted by your time-zone difference, that's why. iPhone videos include the time zone, so their time is exact.
Why doesn't my video have a recording date?
Videos lose it when they are edited, converted, screen-recorded or downloaded from Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and similar apps. The original file from the phone or camera keeps it.
Is the "date created" on my computer the recording date?
Usually not. That is when the file was created on your computer, for example when you copied or downloaded it. The recording date is saved inside the video.
Can a video's recording date be changed?
Yes, with editing tools. Treat it as a strong clue about when something was filmed, not as proof.
What happens to my file?
