What files can hide inside a PDF?

A PDF can carry other files, much like an email carries attachments. Some are added on purpose, such as the spreadsheet behind a report, the source files of a design or the documents in a PDF portfolio. Many PDF readers only show them in a side panel, so they are easy to miss.

Electronic invoices are a common case: ZUGFeRD, Factur-X and XRechnung invoices are PDFs with the invoice data attached as an XML file. Videos and sounds in interactive PDFs are stored the same way. This tool lists every attached file with its own name, shows the start of text and XML files, and warns you about programs and scripts.

Questions and answers

Why can't I see the attachments in my PDF reader?

Many readers keep them in a side panel, often behind a paperclip icon, and web browsers usually don't show them at all. They are still inside the file.

Can attached files be dangerous?

They can. A PDF can carry a program, a script or a document with macros. We never open the files: we mark risky types so you can decide. Only open attachments from sources you trust.

How do I get the XML out of a ZUGFeRD or Factur-X invoice?

Drop the invoice PDF here. The XML file appears in the list with its own name, such as factur-x.xml or zugferd-invoice.xml, and you can save it with one click.

What is a PDF portfolio?

A PDF that bundles several files together, like a folder. Each file in the portfolio is an attachment, so this tool lists them all and lets you save each one.

Who can see the files?

You can, straight away, in the browser you uploaded from. If you share the result link, others have to sign in to open the files, and result pages never appear in search engines. To remove them, open the full results, choose Report, then "Permanently delete this page".

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
