How pictures are stored inside a PDF

A PDF keeps each photo, scan or logo as a separate image and places it on the page, a bit like a sticker. That's why the picture you see can be smaller or cropped while the full image is still in the file. This tool takes those images out directly, instead of taking screenshots of the pages.

Photos are usually stored as JPEG, and you get them back exactly as they are, with no re-compression. Other images, such as scans, transparent logos or JPEG 2000 and JBIG2 pictures, become lossless PNG files that any browser can show. An image repeated on every page, like a logo, is kept once, and the small masks a PDF uses for transparency are left out.

Questions and answers

Will the images lose quality?

No. JPEG photos are saved exactly as they are stored in the PDF, byte for byte, and other images are saved as PNG, which is lossless. If an image looks small, that is the size it was given when the PDF was made.

Why are some images missing?

Charts, diagrams and text that the PDF draws with lines aren't images, so they can't be taken out this way. Tiny images such as dots and lines, the masks used for transparency, and repeats of the same image are left out too.

Can I get the pages of a scanned PDF as images?

Yes. A scanned PDF usually holds one picture per page, so you get each page as an image, at the resolution it was scanned at.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

A PDF that only blocks printing or copying opens fine. One that asks for a password before it opens can't be read, so remove the password first.

Who can see the images?

You can, straight away, in the browser you uploaded from. If you share the result link, others have to sign in to open the images, and result pages never appear in search engines. To remove them, open the full results, choose Report, then "Permanently delete this page".

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
