How can a photo show where it was taken?
When location is turned on, phones and many cameras save the GPS position inside every photo they take, along with the date and the device. It stays hidden in the file, but it travels with the photo when you copy it, email it or upload it to some websites.
This tool reads that position and shows it on a map with the nearest address. If it's your own photo, it's also a quick way to check what you'd be sharing before you post it.

Questions and answers
How do I find where a photo was taken?
Drop the photo into the box above. If it contains a GPS position, the place appears on a map with its address and coordinates, usually within a few seconds.
Why doesn't my photo show a location?
Either location was turned off on the phone or camera when the photo was taken, or it was removed later. Facebook, Instagram, X, WhatsApp and most messaging apps remove the location from photos you send or upload. Screenshots never have one.
How accurate is the location?
Usually within a few metres outdoors. Indoors, or with a weak GPS signal, it can be off by tens of metres. When the phone saved its accuracy, we show it next to the altitude.
Can I find the location of a photo from Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp?
Usually not. These services remove the location from photos when they are uploaded or sent. Only the original file from the phone or camera still has it.
How do I stop my photos from showing my location?
Turn off location for the camera app in your phone's settings, or remove the location from a photo before you share it with our free Metadata Remover.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
