What DPI really means
DPI (dots per inch) tells a printer how many of the image's pixels to fit into each inch of paper. The same 3000-pixel-wide photo prints 10 inches wide at 300 DPI and over 41 inches wide at 72 DPI, with exactly the same detail.
Print shops, publishers and stock sites often ask for 300 DPI. This tool shows the DPI saved in your file, what size that prints at, and how big the image can print at 300 DPI.
- DPI from every place it's saved
- Print size in inches and cm
- Size at 300 DPI
- JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PSD
Questions and answers
How do I check the DPI of an image?
Drop the image into the box above. You'll see the DPI saved in it, the size it prints at, and the size it can print at 300 DPI, in inches and centimetres.
Is 72 DPI bad quality?
Not on its own. 72 is a default many cameras and apps write. A 4000-pixel photo saved at 72 DPI has just as much detail as the same photo at 300 DPI; it would only print larger and softer if you used the 72 DPI size.
What DPI do I need for printing?
For photos and anything seen up close, about 300 DPI. Posters viewed from a distance look fine at 150 DPI, and large banners at even less.
Why does my computer show a different DPI?
An image can store its DPI in several places, such as EXIF, JFIF, Photoshop and PNG, and they don't always agree. Windows, macOS and Photoshop each read a different one. We show every value the file contains.
How do I change an image to 300 DPI?
In most photo apps, look for "Image size" or "Resolution" and set 300 with resampling turned off. That changes only the print size, not the pixels, so no quality is lost.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
