How a video remembers where it was filmed

iPhones, many Android phones, GoPros and drones save a GPS position inside the videos they record, just as they do for photos. It stays in the file when you copy it, AirDrop it or send it as a file.

This tool reads that position and shows it on a map with the nearest address. It's also a quick way to check what an original video reveals before you share it.

Questions and answers

How do I find where a video was recorded?

Drop the video into the box above. If it contains a GPS position, the place appears on a map with its address and coordinates.

Do iPhone videos have location data?

Yes, when location is allowed for the Camera app. iPhone videos store the position where recording started, including the altitude.

Why doesn't my video show a location?

Location may have been off for the camera, or it was removed later. Editing apps, converters, screen recordings and social networks like Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp drop it.

Can I see the whole route of a GoPro or drone video?

This tool shows where recording started. The full route is in the complete metadata of GoPro, DJI and dashcam videos. Use "See all metadata" to view it.

How do I remove the location from a video?

Turn off location for the camera before recording, or remove it from the file with our free Metadata Remover before you share it.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
