The dates inside a PDF
Most apps save two dates inside every PDF: when it was created and when it was last changed. They stay with the file when it's emailed or downloaded, unlike the dates your computer shows.
Comparing them is a quick check: a contract "created" months ago but changed this morning was edited. This tool shows both dates, the gap between them and the app that made the file.

How can I see when a PDF was created?

How can I tell if a PDF was edited?
Compare the two dates. If it was changed long after it was created, it was edited or re-saved. Our PDF Author Finder also shows which apps touched the file.
Why is the date on my computer different?
Your computer shows when the file was saved or downloaded to it. The creation date is written inside the PDF by the app that made it.
Can PDF dates be faked?
Yes. They come from the creating computer's clock and can be changed with PDF editors, so they're a clue, not proof.
Why does my PDF have no creation date?
Some apps don't write one, and PDF cleaners, compressors and some online converters remove it.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
