What is a shutter count?
A camera's shutter is a small mechanical curtain that opens for every photo. Like a car's engine, it wears out over time, and makers rate it for a certain number of shots, often between 100,000 and 500,000. The shutter count tells you how many photos a camera has taken so far.
Many cameras quietly write this number into every photo. Checking it is the quickest way to tell how much a used camera has been used before you buy or sell it.

Questions and answers
How do I check my camera's shutter count?
Take a new photo with the camera, copy the original file from the memory card to your computer or phone, and drop it into the box above. The count is read from the photo in a few seconds.
Why does it say no shutter count was found?
The count is stored in the camera's private notes inside the photo. Editing apps such as Lightroom or Photoshop, social networks and messaging apps usually remove those notes. Use the original file straight from the camera. Some brands, such as most Canon, Olympus and Panasonic models, never save the count in their photos.
Is a shutter count of 50,000 a lot?
It depends on the camera. Entry-level cameras are often rated for around 100,000 to 150,000 shots, enthusiast models for about 200,000, and professional bodies for 300,000 to 500,000. A count well below the rating means the shutter has plenty of life left. Many shutters last much longer than their rating.
Does the count include shots taken with the electronic shutter?
On many mirrorless cameras, yes. Nikon Z and recent Sony cameras count every frame, and some also save a separate mechanical count, which we show when it's there. Fujifilm cameras save an image count that includes electronic and burst frames.
Can I check the shutter count of a camera I'm buying online?
Yes. Ask the seller to send you an original, unedited photo taken today, by email or a file-sharing link, not through a messaging app, which removes the details. Then check it here.
Can the shutter count be reset?
Usually only by a repair centre, for example when the shutter is replaced. A low count on a camera that looks heavily used is worth asking about.
