What editing leaves in a PDF
Every PDF records when it was created and last changed, and which apps made it. Editing it in Acrobat, iLovePDF, Smallpdf and similar tools usually updates those details, and some keep a history of each save.

How can I tell if a PDF has been edited?

Can I tell if a bank statement PDF is fake?
This is a useful first check: statements are generated by bank systems, so an editor like iLovePDF or a later change date is a red flag. It can't prove a document is genuine; ask the issuer if it matters.
Does signing or filling in a PDF count as editing?
Yes, technically: it saves the file again and changes its dates. That's why a "possibly edited" result is a prompt to look closer, not proof of tampering.
Why does it say it can't tell?
The PDF has no dates or app names left. Some converters and cleaners remove them, so there's nothing to compare.
