What your photos can give away

Phones save the exact spot where each photo is taken, often accurate to a few metres. Share the original file of a picture taken at home, and you may be sharing your address.

This check shows what a photo reveals before you send it, so you can decide. If it shows more than you want, our free Metadata Remover cleans it in one click.

Questions and answers

Do my photos show where I live?

They can. If location is on for your camera, photos taken at home contain coordinates that point to your house. Anyone who gets the original file can see them.

Does Instagram or Facebook show my photo's location?

They remove the GPS data from photos you post, unless you add a location tag yourself. Email, AirDrop, cloud links, many forums and some marketplaces keep it.

How do I stop my phone saving the location in photos?

On iPhone, go to Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, Camera, and choose Never. On Android, turn off location tags in the Camera app's settings.

How do I remove the location from a photo?

Use our free Metadata Remover: drop the photo in and download a clean copy, without the location or other hidden details.

Can a photo give away my location without GPS?

Yes, through what's in the picture: street signs, landmarks, house numbers or a view from your window. This check covers the hidden details in the file, so look at the picture itself too.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
