Where Nikon keeps the shutter count

Nikon cameras write the number of shutter releases into every photo, inside their private maker notes. Nikon scrambles that part of the file with the camera's serial number, so most apps can't read it. This tool decodes it.

On Z mirrorless cameras the number counts every shot, including those taken with the electronic shutter. Some models also store a separate mechanical count, which we show when it's there.

Questions and answers

How do I check the shutter count on my Nikon?

Take a photo, copy the original JPEG or NEF from the memory card, and drop it into the box above. The count appears in a few seconds. No software or cable is needed.

Does the Nikon count include electronic shutter shots?

On Z mirrorless cameras, yes: the main count includes silent and electronic-shutter photos. When the camera also saves a mechanical-only count, we show it separately, and that is the one that reflects shutter wear.

How many shots is a Nikon shutter rated for?

Nikon tests its enthusiast and professional bodies for roughly 150,000 to 400,000 cycles, for example 150,000 for the D750 and 200,000 for the D850. Entry-level models aren't rated publicly, and many shutters last well beyond their rating.

Why can't it find my Nikon's shutter count?

The photo was probably edited or converted. Lightroom exports, DNG conversions and photos sent through apps lose Nikon's maker notes. Use the original file from the card. Nikon Coolpix compacts don't save a count.

Can I check a used Nikon before buying it?

Yes. Ask the seller for an original, unedited photo taken today, sent as a file by email or a download link, not through a messaging app. Then check it here.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
