Where Word keeps your pictures

A .docx file is really a small package of files. Every picture you insert is saved in it as its own image file, and the text only points to it. Cropping or shrinking a picture in Word changes how it is shown, not the file itself.

So the original is usually still there at full size, cropped parts included, unless someone used Word's Compress Pictures option. This tool opens the package and shows each picture as it is stored, plus the small preview saved with the file when there is one. A picture used twice appears once. Old .doc files aren't supported yet.

Questions and answers

Why does a picture look different from the document?

Word shows pictures cropped, resized or rotated, but it saves the original image. You get that original, which can be larger and show more than the page does.

Why can some pictures only be downloaded?

Clip art and older drawings are often saved as EMF or WMF, formats browsers can't show. Download them and open them in Word, LibreOffice or a graphics program.

Does it work with old .doc files?

Not yet. Open the document in Word, save it as .docx (File, Save As) and drop that file instead.

Will the pictures lose quality?

No. They are saved exactly as they are stored in the document. If Word compressed them when the file was saved, that lower quality is what the document holds.

Who can see the pictures?

You can, straight away, in the browser you uploaded from. If you share the result link, others have to sign in to open the pictures, and result pages never appear in search engines. To remove them, open the full results, choose Report, then "Permanently delete this page".

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
