What is a shutter's rated life?
A camera's mechanical shutter opens and closes for every photo, and like any moving part it wears. Makers test their shutters and rate each model for a number of shots: around 100,000 for entry-level cameras, 200,000 to 300,000 for enthusiast bodies and 400,000 or more for professional ones.
The shutter count tells you how many shots a camera has taken. Set against the rating, it shows how worn a used camera is, which is the first thing to check before buying or selling one.

Questions and answers
How long does a camera shutter last?
Makers rate their shutters for a number of shots: roughly 100,000 to 150,000 for entry-level cameras, 150,000 to 300,000 for enthusiast models and 400,000 to 500,000 for professional bodies. The rating is an average, so a shutter can fail before it or last far beyond it.
What happens when a camera passes its rated shutter life?
Usually nothing at first. Many shutters keep working long past their rating. When one does fail, a camera repair service can replace it, which on most models costs far less than a new camera.
Do photos taken with the electronic shutter count?
They don't wear the mechanical shutter. Some cameras, such as Nikon's Z models, still include them in the shutter count, so the percentage can overstate the wear on a camera that is often used in silent mode.
Why can't you find the rating for my camera?
Makers don't publish a shutter rating for every model, especially entry-level and older cameras. When we don't know one, we still show the shutter count.
Is a camera with a high shutter count a bad buy?
Not necessarily. A camera at 70% of its rating may have many years left, and a shutter replacement is a routine repair. Use the count to judge the price, along with the camera's overall condition.
