The dates inside a document
Office files save when they were created and last saved, inside the file. Those dates stay the same when the file is emailed, downloaded or copied, unlike the dates your computer shows.
This tool reads them, with the time between them and the app that saved the file. It's a quick way to see how old a document really is.

How can I see when a Word document was created?
Drop it into the box above, or in Word go to File, Info, Properties. We show the creation date saved in the file, when it was last saved, and the app used.
Why is the date different from my computer's?
Your computer shows when the file arrived on it. The creation date is saved inside the document by the app that made it.
Does "Save As" change the creation date?
Yes. The new copy gets a new creation date, so an old document saved under a new name looks recent.
Can document dates be faked?
Yes. They come from the computer's clock and can be edited, so they're a clue rather than proof.
Does it work with Excel and PowerPoint?
Yes, along with older DOC, XLS and PPT files and OpenDocument files from LibreOffice.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
