Questions and answers

How do I get the GPS coordinates from a photo?

Drop the photo into the box above. If it was taken with location on, you'll get its coordinates in four formats, each with a copy button.

Which format should I use for Google Maps?

Decimal degrees, such as 38.711470, -9.139760. Paste it into the search box and Maps goes straight to the spot.

What do N, S, E and W mean?

North or South of the equator for latitude, and East or West of Greenwich for longitude. In decimal degrees, South and West are written as negative numbers instead.

How accurate are photo coordinates?

Usually within a few metres outdoors, and less precise indoors or with a weak signal. When the phone saved its accuracy, the location finder shows it.

Why doesn't my photo have coordinates?

Location may have been off for the camera, or the coordinates were removed: social networks and messaging apps strip them. Only the original file keeps them.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
