Why photos carry a second, smaller picture

Cameras and many apps save a small preview inside each photo so galleries can show it quickly. Some editing apps update the main picture but leave that preview untouched.

That's why a cropped or retouched photo can still contain the original in miniature. RAW files go further: they carry a larger preview and often a full-size JPEG. This tool shows every image it finds, smallest first, so you can compare.

Questions and answers

What is an EXIF thumbnail?

A small copy of the photo, often 160 × 120 pixels, saved inside the file so galleries and cameras can show a preview quickly.

Can a thumbnail show what was cropped out of a photo?

Sometimes. If an app cropped or edited the photo but kept the old thumbnail, the preview still shows the original picture. We point it out when the shapes don't match.

Why do I need to sign in to see it?

Images saved inside files can show anything, so we only display them to signed-in visitors. Signing up is free, and you can then download each image too.

Why doesn't my photo have a thumbnail?

PNGs and screenshots don't have one, and many apps and social networks drop it when they re-save a photo.

How do I remove the thumbnail from a photo?

Use our free Metadata Remover. It removes the thumbnail together with location, camera and other hidden details.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
