What an iPhone records in every photo

iPhones save the model, which of their cameras took the shot, the lens's focal length and aperture, and the iOS version. Apple's own notes add whether it's a Live Photo, a Portrait or ProRAW capture, and the HDR data that makes highlights glow on new screens.

It tells you which iPhone and lens to use to get a similar shot, helps sort a library, and shows what a photo reveals about the phone it came from.

Questions and answers

How do I know which iPhone took a photo?

Drop the original photo into the box above. You'll see the iPhone model, the camera used, and the iOS version it was running.

How can I tell which iPhone camera was used?

From the lens the iPhone records and the focal length: the ultra wide is 0.5×, the main camera 1× (and 2× on recent models), the telephoto 2×, 3× or 5× depending on the model.

Does it work with photos shared from an iPhone?

AirDrop and "Export Unmodified Original" keep the details. Messages, WhatsApp and social networks usually remove them.

Why doesn't it show the location?

This page focuses on the iPhone itself. Our Photo Location Finder shows where the photo was taken.

Does it work for iPad photos?

Yes. iPads record the same details, so you'll see the iPad model and camera.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
