Why the PDF version matters

Each PDF version added features, from transparency in 1.4 to the ISO standard in 1.7 and PDF 2.0. Portals, printers and archives sometimes require a specific version or PDF/A, the archiving standard.

This tool shows the version saved in the file and the standards it claims, so you can check before uploading to a government or court portal or sending to print.

Questions and answers

How do I check a PDF's version?

Drop the PDF into the box above. You'll see its version and any standards it claims.

What is PDF/A?

An ISO standard for long-term archiving. It embeds fonts and avoids anything that might not display the same in the future. Courts and governments often require it.

Is PDF 1.7 or 2.0 better?

PDF 2.0 is newer, but 1.7 is the safest for compatibility. Choose 2.0 only if you need its features and know your readers support it.

What does "tagged" mean?

A tagged PDF describes its structure (headings, lists, reading order) so screen readers can read it aloud. It's required for many accessibility rules.

What is "fast web view"?

A linearized PDF can show its first page in a browser before the whole file has downloaded.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
