Why the time in a photo needs a time zone
Cameras save the time a photo was taken by their own clock, usually with no time zone. 14:05 could be any time of day elsewhere. Phones and newer cameras add the offset from UTC, and photos with GPS also carry the satellite clock, which is always UTC.
With the offset, a photo's time becomes exact. It puts travel photos in the right order, lines up pictures from several cameras, and tells you whether a camera's clock was set right.

Questions and answers
How do I find the time zone of a photo?
Drop the photo into the box above. If it records a time zone, or a GPS time we can compare with the local time, you'll see the offset from UTC.
What does UTC+02:00 mean?
The local clock was two hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the world's reference time. Central Europe in summer, South Africa and Egypt are examples.
Why doesn't my camera photo have a time zone?
Many cameras only save their clock time. Newer models write the offset if you set your time zone in the camera's menu, and phones always do.
Can it tell the city or country?
Not from the offset alone, since many places share each one. Our Photo Location Finder shows where the photo was taken if it has GPS data.
Why does it say "worked out from the GPS clock"?
The photo stores no time zone, but it has both the camera's local time and the GPS time, which is UTC. The difference between them is the offset, rounded to the nearest quarter of an hour.
