Why a photo knows your firmware
Firmware is the software inside a camera. Makers release updates that fix bugs, improve autofocus or add features, and most cameras write the version they are running into every photo, in the same place an editing app would write its own name.
A recent photo is the quickest way to check which version you have without digging through the camera's menus. It also tells you whether a used camera has been kept up to date.
- Firmware version
- Camera model
- Date of the photo
- Phone system version
Questions and answers
How do I check my camera's firmware version?
Take a photo with the camera, then drop the original file into the box above. You'll see the firmware version it was running. You can also find it in the camera's setup menu, usually under "Firmware version".
Why does an older photo show an older version?
Each photo records the firmware installed when it was taken. If you've updated since, check a newly taken photo to see the current version.
Why does it show a program name instead?
Editing apps write their own name in the same place. We never show a program's version as firmware, so an edited photo shows no firmware at all. Use the original file from the camera.
What does it show for phone photos?
Phones record their system version, such as iOS 17.4 on an iPhone, which also covers the camera software.
Should I update my camera's firmware?
Usually yes. Updates fix problems and sometimes add features. Read the maker's release notes for your model, and use a fully charged battery when you install one.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
