Why photos carry a serial number
Most interchangeable-lens cameras write their serial number into every photo, and many lenses add theirs too. It stays in the original file wherever it goes.
That's useful when you need to register a camera, fill in an insurance form or show a photo you took proves the camera is yours. It's also why it's worth removing before sharing originals publicly.

Questions and answers
How do I find my camera's serial number from a photo?
Drop an original photo from the camera into the box above. If the camera saved its serial number, it appears in a few seconds, with the lens serial number when there is one.
Why doesn't the number match the one on my camera?
Some makers save an internal serial number that differs from the number printed on the body. Canon, Fujifilm and Panasonic often do. We show every number the file contains.
Can I find a stolen camera with its serial number?
The serial number can identify your camera's photos if they appear online. Keep a record of it, and report it to the police and your insurer if the camera is stolen.
Do phone photos have a serial number?
No. Phones don't write a device serial number into their photos.
Should I remove the serial number before sharing photos?
If you share original files publicly, it's a good idea: the number links every photo back to the same camera. Our free Metadata Remover takes it out.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
