Where does a lens serial number come from?
Modern lenses with electronic contacts tell the camera who they are. Many also send their serial number, which the camera writes into each photo next to its own. Canon, Nikon Z, Sony E-mount, Fujifilm and Sigma lenses commonly do.
That makes any original photo a record of exactly which lens took it. It helps with insurance claims, theft reports and confirming that a used lens matches its paperwork.

Questions and answers
How do I find my lens's serial number from a photo?
Drop an original photo taken with the lens into the box above. If the lens reported it, the serial number appears with the lens name and the camera it was used on.
Why is no lens serial number shown?
Not every lens sends one. Older lenses, many third-party and adapted lenses, and fixed-lens cameras and phones usually don't. Editing apps and messaging apps can remove it too.
Does it match the number printed on the lens?
Usually yes. Some makers report a slightly different form, for example with extra leading zeros or a shorter internal number, so compare the digits rather than the exact layout.
Can a lens serial number help recover stolen gear?
It can. If someone shares photos taken with your stolen lens, the serial number in those photos ties the lens to you. Keep a few original photos from each lens for that reason.
Is it safe to share photos that contain my serial numbers?
Serial numbers identify your equipment, and with it you. Our Metadata Remover strips them, along with the location and other personal details, before you share a photo.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
