How ChatGPT marks its images
Images made with ChatGPT and OpenAI's other image models carry Content Credentials (C2PA): a signed record saying they were generated by AI, with OpenAI's digital signature. Anyone can check that signature, and any change to the image after signing shows up.
The record lives in the file's metadata, so it survives downloading the original, but not screenshots or most social networks. When it's there, it's strong evidence; when it's gone, the image could still be AI-made.

Questions and answers
How do I know if an image was made by ChatGPT?
Drop the original file into the box above. If it carries OpenAI's Content Credentials, we check the signature and tell you whether it was changed afterwards.
Does every ChatGPT image have Content Credentials?
Images downloaded from ChatGPT do. They lose them when they are screenshotted, edited in many apps or uploaded to social networks that strip metadata.
Can the credentials be faked?
They are digitally signed, so a fake or altered record fails the signature check. Removing them is easy, though, which is why their absence proves nothing.
What if it was made with another AI tool?
We say which one when the image names it, such as Midjourney or Adobe Firefly. Our AI Image Checker covers every generator we know.
Does this detect AI by looking at the picture?
No. It reads the records saved in the file, which is reliable when they are there. It doesn't guess from the pixels.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
