Where a dash cam keeps its GPS
Dash cams with GPS record the car's position, usually once a second, with the time and often the speed. Many save it inside each video file, in a format that varies from brand to brand; some keep it in a separate file next to the videos.
We read the positions saved in the video, draw the route and give it to you as GPX or CSV. It's a quick way to show where and when a clip was recorded, for example for an insurance claim.

Questions and answers
How do I get the GPS data from a dash cam video?
Drop the original video from the memory card into the box above. If the GPS is inside the file, the route appears on the map with download buttons.
Which dash cams work?
Many brands that store GPS in the video, including Garmin, Nextbase, Viofo, BlackVue, Thinkware and cameras built on Novatek chips. Some keep GPS in a separate .gps or .nmea file, which this tool doesn't read.
Does it show the speed?
It shows the average speed over the clip, worked out from the distance and time. The exact speed at a given moment is in the CSV download, from the positions and times.
Can I use this for an insurance claim?
It helps you see and share where and when a clip was recorded. For a formal claim, also keep the original video files from the card, untouched.
Why is no route found?
GPS may have been off or without a fix, the camera may store it elsewhere, or the video was exported by an app that drops it. Use the original file from the card.
What happens to my file?
