What a depth map is, and why your photo has one
To blur the background in a portrait, a phone works out how far away each part of the scene is. Many phones keep that result inside the photo as a small greyscale image, so the blur can be changed later.
The map is a sketch of the scene's shape, not a measurement: it shows a person against a background, a table in front of a wall. People use it for 3D and parallax effects, in editing and AI tools that take a depth input, or simply to see what their photo carries.

Questions and answers
Which photos have a depth map?
Portrait-style photos: iPhone Portrait mode (and, on iPhone 15 and later, photos of people and pets taken in Photo mode), Pixel and other Android portrait shots, Samsung Live focus and Google Camera lens blur.
Why does my photo have no depth map?
It wasn't taken in a portrait-style mode, it was taken with the ultra-wide camera, or the depth was lost when the photo was edited, converted, or sent through a messaging or social app. Use the original file from the phone.
Why is the depth map smaller than the photo?
Phones work out depth at a lower resolution and scale it up when they blur. A map of 768 × 576 pixels beside a 12-megapixel photo is normal.
Are the distances exact?
Usually not. iPhones mark their depth "relative": it ranks what is nearer or farther. We show distances in meters only when the file states real units.
Why do I need to sign in to see it?
Images saved inside files can show anything, so we only display them to the person who uploaded the photo and to signed-in visitors. Signing up is free.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
