What's in a DICOM file

Hospitals store scans as DICOM files: each image, or each slice of a CT or MRI, is a file holding the picture and details about the patient, the study, the date, the hospital and the scanner. A scan on a CD or in a download is a folder full of them.

This viewer opens one of those files in your browser, shows the picture and lists what the file says, including whether it still names the patient, which matters before you share it with anyone.

Questions and answers

How do I open a .dcm file?

Drop it into the box above. Files from a hospital CD often have no extension, like IM00001 inside a DICOM folder: pick one and drop it here.

Why does the picture look flat or too dark?

Scans hold far more shades of grey than a screen can show, so viewers pick a contrast window. We show one standard setting; your hospital's viewer lets radiologists adjust it.

Why does it show only one image?

Each file is usually one slice. A CT or MRI study is hundreds of files; this tool opens one at a time, and multi-frame files show their first frame.

How do I remove my name before sharing a scan?

Use the button on the result, or our Metadata Remover: it strips the patient's name, ID, birth date and other identifying details from the file.

Who can see a scan I upload?

The picture is shown only to you, as the uploader, and to signed-in users with the link. The page is never listed in search engines, and the file is deleted automatically after a while.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
