What a font file says about itself

Every font carries a name table: its family and style, its full name, version, the designer and the foundry that made it, a copyright line and often its licence with a link.

It's the quickest way to identify a font file with a cryptic name, credit its designer, or check how it is licensed before you put it on a website or a product.

Questions and answers

How do I find the name of a font file?

Drop it into the box above. You'll see the font's real name and style, whatever the file is called.

Can I use this font commercially?

We show its licence text and a first hint. Open-source licences such as SIL OFL usually allow it; anything else, read the licence or ask the foundry.

What is the SIL Open Font License?

A free licence used by most open-source fonts, including many Google Fonts. It allows use in commercial work, but not selling the font on its own.

Does it identify a font from an image?

No. It reads font files. To identify a font in a picture, you need a font-matching service.

Which formats are supported?

TrueType (TTF), OpenType (OTF), web fonts (WOFF, WOFF2), font collections (TTC) and older PostScript fonts.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
