What a DJI drone records in each photo

DJI drones write their flight state into every photo: the height above the point they took off from, the GPS altitude, the gimbal's pitch, roll and heading, the drone's own attitude and speed. Survey and mapping software relies on this data.

It shows how high you were for a shot, confirms flights stayed within height limits, and helps plan the same shot again. The camera code tells you which drone took it.

  • Height above take-off
  • Altitude above sea level
  • Camera tilt and heading
  • Drone model

Questions and answers

How do I see how high my drone photo was taken?

Drop the original photo into the box above. DJI drones record their height above the take-off point, which we show first, plus the altitude above sea level.

What is the difference between relative and absolute altitude?

Relative altitude is the height above where the drone took off. Absolute altitude is the height above sea level from GPS. On a hill they can differ by hundreds of metres.

What does a camera tilt of −90° mean?

The camera was pointing straight down, as for top-down and mapping shots. 0° is level with the horizon.

Which drones does it work with?

DJI Mini, Air, Mavic, Phantom and enterprise models that write DJI's flight data. Photos from other drone makers show their own details in the full metadata.

Why is the flight data missing?

Editing apps, social networks and some transfers remove it. Copy photos straight from the drone's memory card to keep it.
