How a photo knows its altitude

When a phone, GPS camera or drone saves where a photo was taken, it often saves the height too: the altitude above sea level from its satellite fix, sometimes helped by a barometer. Drones also record their height above the point they took off from.

It's a nice way to prove you reached a summit, label hiking photos or check a drone's height. Keep in mind that GPS altitude can be a few dozen metres out, so treat it as a good estimate.

Questions and answers

How do I find the elevation of a photo?

Drop the photo into the box above. If it was taken with location on, you'll see its altitude in metres and in feet.

How accurate is the altitude in a photo?

Less accurate than the position. Phones are often 10 to 20 metres out, sometimes more, while cameras with a barometer and drones tend to do better.

Why is there no altitude in my photo?

Location services may have been off, the camera may record only the position, or the photo went through an app that removes GPS details. Use the original file.

What does a negative altitude mean?

The photo was taken below sea level, for example near the Dead Sea, or the GPS reading was off, which can happen indoors and underground.

Which altitude does a drone photo show?

We show the height above sea level, and DJI drones' height above the take-off point as an extra detail. Our DJI Drone Photo Data tool shows the full flight details.

What happens to my file?
