Getting product photos out of a spreadsheet

Catalogues and price lists often arrive as Excel files with a photo next to each product. Saving them one at a time is slow, and copying a picture out of Excel can shrink it to the size shown on the sheet.

An .xlsx file is a package of files, and every picture placed on a sheet, including pictures placed inside a cell, is stored in it as its own image file. This tool opens the package and gives you all of them at once, at the size they were inserted. A picture used several times appears once.

Questions and answers

Can I tell which product each picture belongs to?

Not from the file names, because Excel numbers its pictures as it saves them. The order usually follows the order they were added, so keep the workbook open alongside to match them up.

Are charts included?

No. Excel draws charts from your data, so they aren't picture files. To save a chart as an image, right-click it in Excel and choose Save as Picture.

Does it work with old .xls files?

Not yet. Open the workbook in Excel, save it as .xlsx and drop that file instead.

Will the pictures lose quality?

No. You get each picture exactly as it is stored in the workbook. If Excel compressed it when the file was saved, that is the quality the file holds.

Who can see the pictures?

You can, straight away, in the browser you uploaded from. If you share the result link, others have to sign in to open the pictures, and result pages never appear in search engines. To remove them, open the full results, choose Report, then "Permanently delete this page".

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
