Fujifilm's image count, explained

Fujifilm cameras save an image count rather than a true shutter count. It goes up with every frame, including electronic-shutter and burst shots, so it's a good guide to how much a camera has been used.

The number starts again from zero after 65,535 and can reset after a firmware update or a repair, so on a heavily used camera treat it as approximate.

Questions and answers

Is Fujifilm's image count the same as a shutter count?

Not exactly. It counts frames, including electronic-shutter, burst and pre-shot frames, so it's usually higher than the number of mechanical shutter releases.

Why is the number lower than I expected?

The count starts again from zero after 65,535, and some firmware updates and repairs reset it. A low number on a worn camera is worth asking about.

How do I check my Fujifilm's count?

Take a photo, copy the original JPEG or RAF from the memory card, and drop it into the box above.

Why can't it find a count?

Edited or converted photos lose Fujifilm's maker notes, and photos sent to a phone may be resized copies. Use the original file from the card. Some older compact models don't save a count.

How long does a Fujifilm shutter last?

Fujifilm doesn't publish a rating for every model. Recent X-T and X-H bodies are rated for several hundred thousand shots, and many shutters outlast their rating.
