HDR video, in short

HDR (high dynamic range) video holds much brighter highlights and richer colour than standard video. Phones record it as Dolby Vision (iPhone) or HLG and HDR10 (many Android phones and cameras).

HDR clips can look washed out or harsh on non-HDR screens and in some editors and social apps. This tool tells you which format a video uses so you know what to expect.

Questions and answers

How can I tell if a video is HDR?

Drop it into the box above. We read the colour information saved in the file and tell you whether it's Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG or SDR.

Why does my iPhone video look washed out?

iPhones record HDR (Dolby Vision) by default. Apps and screens that don't support HDR can show it washed out. Turn off HDR Video in Settings, Camera, Record Video, or export a copy in SDR.

What is the difference between HDR10 and HLG?

Both are HDR. HDR10 is common for streaming and films; HLG was designed for broadcast and degrades more gracefully on SDR screens.

Do Instagram and YouTube support HDR?

YouTube supports HDR uploads. Instagram and others support it on some phones, and convert it to SDR elsewhere.

What does "Wide colour (BT.2020)" mean?

The video uses the wide colour range of HDR, but its brightness curve is standard. It's often an intermediate or converted file.
