Frame rates, explained

Frame rate is how many still images a video shows each second. 24 fps gives the film look, 25 and 29.97 fps are the TV standards, 60 fps looks smooth, and 120 fps or more is filmed for slow motion.

Mixing frame rates in an edit causes stutter, and many platforms have limits. This tool shows the exact rate saved in the file, including odd ones like 23.976 and 29.97.

Questions and answers

How do I find out a video's frame rate?

Drop it into the box above. You'll see the exact frame rate, what it's usually used for, and the video's resolution and length.

What's the difference between 29.97 and 30 fps?

29.97 is the NTSC broadcast standard, a tiny bit slower than 30. Mixing the two in an edit can cause small stutters or audio drift.

Why does my slow-motion video show 120 or 240 fps?

Slow motion is filmed at a high frame rate and played back at a normal one. The file keeps the original high rate.

Which frame rate should I use for YouTube or TikTok?

Upload at the rate you filmed in. 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps are all supported; don't convert unless you have to.

Can the frame rate change during a video?

Some phones and screen recorders use a variable frame rate. The file then states an average, which is what we show.
