Where Pentax keeps the shutter count
Pentax DSLRs write the shutter count into every photo, so one original JPEG or raw file from the camera is enough to check it. Both PEF and in-camera DNG raw files keep it.
The count doesn't include Live View or video use, and a service centre resets it when the shutter is replaced.

Questions and answers
How do I check the shutter count on my Pentax?
Take a photo, copy the original file from the memory card, and drop it into the box above. JPEG, PEF and in-camera DNG files all work.
Does the Pentax count include Live View?
No. Live View and video use the shutter differently and aren't included, so the number reflects normal shots through the viewfinder.
Can the Pentax shutter count be reset?
A service centre resets it when the shutter unit is replaced. A low count on a camera that looks well used is worth asking about.
Why can't it find my Pentax's count?
The photo was probably edited or converted after it left the camera, which removes the maker notes. Use the original file from the card.
How many shots is a Pentax shutter rated for?
Ratings vary by model, from about 100,000 shots for entry models to 300,000 for the flagship K-3 III. Many shutters last longer than their rating.
What happens to my file?
