Why photos come out sideways
A camera's sensor always records a landscape picture. When you hold the phone upright, it doesn't turn the pixels; it saves them as they are and writes a small note, the EXIF orientation, saying how to turn the picture for viewing.
Your phone reads that note, so the photo looks right there. An app or website that ignores it shows the pixels as stored: sideways or upside down. This tool shows the note and both views side by side.

Questions and answers
Why is my photo sideways when I upload it?
The photo is stored sideways with a note saying how to turn it. The site you uploaded to ignores the note. Rotate the photo in an editor and save it, and it will show upright everywhere.
What is EXIF orientation?
A setting saved with the photo that tells apps how to turn or flip it for viewing, such as "rotate 90° clockwise". It saves the camera from turning the pixels itself.
Why does it look fine on my phone but not on my computer?
Your phone follows the orientation note. Some programs, especially older ones, and some websites don't, so they show the stored, unturned picture.
Why are selfies mirrored?
Front cameras often save the picture as you saw it in the preview, like a mirror. Some phones store it unflipped with a note to mirror it.
Does removing metadata make photos sideways?
It can, if a tool deletes the orientation note without turning the pixels. Good tools rotate the image first, so it stays upright.
