How slow motion works
Slow motion is filmed fast and played slowly. A phone records 120 or 240 frames every second, then plays them back at 30 frames a second, so one second of action lasts four or eight seconds on screen.
iPhones keep every frame and mark the file to play slowed down, which is why the Photos app can change where the slow part starts. This tool reads both rates, so you can tell a real slow-motion clip from one that was just filmed smoothly.

How can I tell if a video is slow motion?
Drop it into the box above. We compare the frame rate it was filmed at with the rate it plays at, and say how many times slower it is.
What frame rate is slow motion?
Anything filmed well above the playback rate: 60 fps played at 30 is 2× slower, 120 fps is 4×, 240 fps is 8×.
Why does my 120 fps video play at normal speed?
Some cameras and apps record at a high frame rate for smooth motion and play it back at full speed. Only clips marked for slow-motion playback, or slowed in an editor, play slowed down.
Does sharing a slow-motion video keep it slow?
Usually the app exports it with the slow motion baked in, at a normal frame rate. That copy plays slowly but no longer shows the original high frame rate.
Does it work for Android phones?
Yes, when the phone records its capture rate, as Samsung and Pixel phones do for slow-motion clips.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
