Why videos play sideways

Phones record video in landscape, whichever way you hold them. When you film upright, they keep the frames as they are and add a rotation to the file telling players to turn the picture.

A player that reads the rotation shows the video upright. One that ignores it shows the raw frames: sideways or upside down. This tool shows the rotation, and the video as stored and as played.

Questions and answers

Why does my video play sideways?

The video is stored sideways with a rotation note, and the app you're using ignores the note. Re-export it from an editor, or rotate it there, and it will play upright everywhere.

Why is it upright on my phone but not on my computer?

Your phone follows the rotation note. Some programs and websites, especially older ones, don't, so they show the stored frames.

What does "turned 90° clockwise" mean?

The frames are stored turned on their side and must be rotated a quarter turn clockwise to play upright. Phones do this when you film holding them upright.

Does rotating a video lose quality?

Changing only the rotation note doesn't. Turning the frames themselves means re-encoding, which loses a little quality unless the editor exports at a high bitrate.

Which formats does it read?

MP4 and MOV from phones and cameras, and MKV and WebM when they carry a rotation.
