What messaging apps do to your photos

WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and Messenger shrink photos to save data, usually to 1600 or 2560 pixels on the longest side, and remove almost all their metadata: the camera, the date, the location. When you save a photo from a chat, it also gets the app's own file name.

So a photo from a chat is a smaller copy that has lost its history. Knowing that helps when you check where an image came from, or wonder why your photo has no date or location any more.

Questions and answers

Can you tell if a photo was sent on WhatsApp?

Often. Photos saved from WhatsApp have names like IMG-20250105-WA0012.jpg, no camera details and a resized width. We check for those signs and say how sure we are.

Does WhatsApp remove metadata from photos?

Yes. Photos sent normally lose the camera, date and location. Sending as a document keeps the original file and its metadata.

Does WhatsApp reduce photo quality?

Yes. Standard quality shrinks photos to about 1600 pixels and compresses them. HD quality keeps more pixels, but still removes the metadata.

Why does it say "can't tell"?

The photo has no clear signs either way. Many apps, websites and editors strip details the same way, so a stripped photo isn't proof of a messaging app.

How do I send a photo without losing its details?

Send it as a document or file instead of a photo. To share safely without your location, use our Metadata Remover first.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
