How a photo remembers its software

Every app that saves a photo can write its name into it. Cameras write their firmware version, phones their OS version, and editors like Photoshop and Lightroom their name, often with a history of every save.

This tool shows the last software that touched the file and, when there is one, the whole timeline. It's a quick way to see whether a photo came straight from the camera.

Questions and answers

How can I tell which app edited a photo?

Drop it into the box above. You'll see the software that last saved it and, if the app kept one, a timeline of every save.

What does "Ver.1.02" mean?

That's camera firmware. It means the file was last written by the camera itself, not an editing app.

Does Photoshop leave traces in a photo?

Usually yes: its name and version, and often an edit history listing every save with its date. Exporting with "Save for Web" or stripping metadata removes them.

Why is no software shown?

The photo doesn't name one. Screenshots, images from social networks and files cleaned of metadata often have none.

Can the software name be changed?

Yes, with metadata editors, so treat it as a strong clue rather than proof. Our Photo Edit Checker weighs it together with other traces.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
