Where Lightroom keeps its edits

Lightroom and Camera Raw never change the original pixels. They record every slider as a setting, and when you export a photo with all its metadata, those settings travel with it: exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, colour, the profile, the preset, the crop and even masks.

That makes an exported photo a recipe you can read. See how a photographer got a look you like, check your own edits, or copy the settings as a starting point for your next photo.

Questions and answers

How can I see the Lightroom settings of a photo?

Drop the photo into the box above. If it was exported from Lightroom or Camera Raw with its metadata, you'll see every Basic panel slider that was moved, plus the profile, preset, crop and masks.

Why doesn't my photo show any settings?

Lightroom only includes them when the export's Metadata option is set to "All Metadata"; "Copyright Only" and "All Except Camera Raw Info" leave them out. Photos shared on social networks lose them too.

Can I copy the settings into my own Lightroom?

Use "Copy the recipe" to get the values as text, then set the same sliders. Expect to adjust: the same numbers look different on another camera and in different light.

Does it show which preset was used?

It shows the profile and the "look" Lightroom saved, which is how presets and Adobe's creative profiles appear. A preset's own name is only kept when it set a look.

Does it work with Camera Raw and Lightroom mobile?

Yes. Photoshop's Camera Raw, Lightroom Classic and the Lightroom apps all save the same settings.

What happens to my file?
