How photos carry their author

Photographers can set their name and a copyright notice in the camera or add them in apps like Lightroom. Agencies and stock sites also fill in a credit line and a link to their licensing terms.

This tool shows those details, so you know who to credit or ask before using a photo. It's also how Google Images decides whether to show a photo's licence details.

Questions and answers

How can I find out who took a photo?

Drop the photo into the box above. If the photographer saved their name or a copyright notice, you'll see it, with their website when they added one.

Why is there no photographer name?

Many cameras leave it empty unless the owner sets it up, and social networks remove it. A reverse image search can help find the original source.

Can I use a photo if it has no copyright notice?

Not automatically. Photos are protected by copyright whether or not they say so. Ask the owner or use photos with a clear licence.

How do I add my name to my photos?

Set the artist and copyright fields in your camera's settings, or add them on import in Lightroom, Capture One or Photo Mechanic.

Is the photographer's name always correct?

No. Anyone can edit these fields, so treat it as a lead and confirm with the source.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
