How Google decides a photo is licensable

Google Images shows a "Licensable" badge on photos that say where they can be licensed. It reads that from the image's IPTC metadata: a Web Statement of Rights (a page explaining the rights) or a Licensor URL (a page to buy a licence), plus the Creator, Credit Line and Copyright Notice it shows next to the image.

Photographers and agencies use it to turn image searches into licensing requests. This checker reads the same fields from your file, so you can fix gaps before you publish.

Questions and answers

What does Google need for the Licensable badge?

A Web Statement of Rights or a Licensor URL in the image's metadata or in structured data on the page. Creator, Credit Line and Copyright Notice are shown too when present.

My photo is ready but has no badge. Why?

Google has to crawl the page and the image again, which can take weeks. Also check that your website serves the original file with its metadata and doesn't strip it when resizing.

How do I add these fields?

In Lightroom, use the IPTC panel or a metadata preset; in Photo Mechanic, the IPTC stationery pad; in Adobe Bridge, File Info.

What is the difference between the two links?

The Web Statement of Rights points to a page describing the image's rights. The Licensor URL points to the place where a licence can be bought. Either one makes the photo eligible.

Does a WordPress upload keep these fields?

WordPress keeps them in the original upload but usually removes them from the smaller sizes it generates. Check the exact file your page shows.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
