How a photo remembers the flash

Cameras and phones record, with every photo, whether the flash fired and how it was set: auto, always on or off, with or without red-eye reduction. Some also note whether the flash saw its light come back and whether an external flash was attached.

It explains harsh shadows, red eyes and flat-looking light, and it settles whether a dark photo was taken without the flash or with one that was too far away.

Questions and answers

How can I tell if a photo was taken with flash?

Drop the photo into the box above. Almost every camera and phone records whether the flash fired, and we show it with the flash mode that was set.

What does "Auto, did not fire" mean?

The flash was on Auto, and the camera decided there was enough light without it.

What is red-eye reduction?

A short burst of light just before the main flash. It makes people's pupils smaller, so less light reflects off the back of their eyes as red.

Does it show whether an external flash was used?

For many cameras, yes. Nikon, Canon and others note whether the flash on top of the camera or the built-in one fired.

Why does it say "No flash" for a phone photo taken in the dark?

Phones often skip the flash in low light and use night mode instead, combining several exposures, so the photo can look bright without any flash.
