What shutter speed does to a photo
The shutter speed, or exposure time, is how long the camera took in light for the photo: 1/1000 of a second for a fast shot, several seconds for a long exposure. Fast speeds freeze movement; slow ones let it blur.
It's the setting to check when a photo is blurry. If the shutter speed was slow, the camera or the subject moved. If it was fast, the blur probably came from missed focus instead.

Questions and answers
How do I find the shutter speed of a photo?
Drop the photo into the box above. You'll see the shutter speed, what it means for movement, and the aperture and ISO it was paired with.
What shutter speed freezes motion?
Around 1/250 s freezes most everyday movement, 1/1000 s or faster freezes sport and birds in flight, and 1/4000 s stops even splashing water.
What is the slowest shutter speed I can hold by hand?
A common rule is 1 divided by the full-frame focal length: 1/50 s at 50 mm, 1/200 s at 200 mm. Image stabilisation lets you go several times slower.
Why is my photo blurry even at a fast shutter speed?
Then the camera most likely focused on the wrong spot, or the subject was too close for the lens. A fast shutter rules out shake and motion blur.
What does a shutter speed like 2 s mean?
The shutter stayed open for two seconds: a long exposure, normally taken on a tripod for night scenes, light trails or smooth water.
