What ISO tells you about a photo

ISO is how much the camera brightened the image from the sensor. In good light it stays low, around 100 to 400, for clean pictures. In dim light the camera turns it up so the photo isn't too dark, and that adds grain, also called noise.

ISO is one of three settings that make an exposure, with aperture and shutter speed. Seeing all three tells you how a photo was taken and what to try if yours come out too dark or too grainy.

Questions and answers

How do I find the ISO of a photo?

Drop the photo into the box above. You'll see the ISO it was taken at, with the aperture and shutter speed, as long as the camera saved them.

What is a good ISO?

As low as the light allows. ISO 100 to 400 gives the cleanest pictures; 800 to 3200 is fine on most modern cameras; above that, grain becomes noticeable.

Why is my photo grainy?

Usually a high ISO in low light. A wider aperture, a slower shutter speed with a steady hand or tripod, or more light lets the camera use a lower ISO.

What is auto ISO?

A mode where the camera picks the ISO for each shot. We show "On" when the photo records that auto ISO was used.

Does it work with phone photos?

Yes. Phones record their ISO too, often very low in daylight and very high at night, when their night modes take over.
